Rogozarski IK-3 colours

Rogozarski IK-3 became operational in 1939. It was the only type to wear proposed fighter overall gray scheme. Problem is that this color was hand mixed  so paint were differ from plane to plane. The same color was enamel based and was mixture of base white color with added Cobalt blue, Ochre and Black color. Color was applied on the plane surface by paint spray gun ,overal. This color was officialy called "Rogozarski Siva" [Rogozarski factory Gray]. It is matter of question why that color was hand mixed as well manufacturer Moster was producing that kind of paint.

Prototype

Rogozarski IK-3 prototype was painted in overall gray green colour, named "Rogozarski Sivo Zelena" (Rogozarski Gray Green) which was official paint of Rogozarski factory for all the prototypes and aeroplane interriors.RYAF markings were 100cm dia and placed on four positions on the wings.Blue/White/Red state flag is painted on the rudder .On rudder port side is painted black inscription on white field:IK-3 /Br.1/Hispano Suiza 12Y-29.White Rogozarski Badge is painted on the top of the tail and black Rogozarski A.D. Beograd inscription on the tail base, port side only.Black cyrilic inscription "DIZI OVDE" (Lift Here) is placed on both fuselage sides.

Overall GRAY GREEN Scheme

Rogozarski IK-3 first delivered production series aeroplanes (No2-No7)were painted in overall gray green colour, similar to prototype scheme.RYAF markings were 100cm dia and placed on four positions on the wings.Blue/White/Red state flag is painted on the rudder . On both rudder  sides is painted black inscription on white field: IK-3 /Br.2-Br.7.White Rogozarski Badge  and black Rogozarski A.D. Beograd inscription is painted on both tail sides.Black inscription "DIZI OVDE" (Lift Here) is placed on both fuselage sides. These planes were repainted in three colour scheme in late 1940.Only top colours were sprayed, undersides remained Gray Green colour. Some planes retain two large RYAF roundels and some wear  just one 100cm dia painted under the starboard wing.

Three colour cammo scheme-Type A-odd serialed IK-3 (No3-No13)

Rogozarski IK-3 three colour camouflage scheme  was introduced with second batch delivered planes, No8-No13 and subsequently first batch planes (No2-No7) were overpainted. Paint source was Belgrade branch of „REINCHOLD, FLUGGER & BOECKING“ paint factory , "DURLIN" enamel paint was used, some 30 kg of paint, lacquer and base coat for each IK-3.

The general arrangement of colour patches was splited in two mirrored schemes, A-odd serialed planes and B-even serialed planes, like RAF system of paint schemes. Rogozarski factory paintshop used IK-3 1:10 scale model with sample scheme which is still preserved in private collection, and all the colours given in this publication were matched by this model which is built and  painted in Rogozarski factory in 1940, using original  factory paints. RYAF markings were 70 & 100 cm dia and placed on port  wing underside and starboard wing topside . Small Blue/White/Red state flag is painted on the rudder . White Rogozarski Badge and black "Rogozarski A.D. Beograd" inscription is painted on both tail sides. Black inscription "DIZI OVDE" (Lift Here) is placed on both fuselage sides.

Four digit serials 2151-2162, known as Ve.Br. ( Vojno Evidencijski Broj=Army Evidence Number) were painted in black on both fuselage sides and production number (2-13) was painted on rudder below of  the trim tab. "DIZI OVDE" inscription is painted in same manner and position as on overall gray scheme painted IK-3s. In late 1940. was introduced new system of serials, painted on top vertical tail , consisting of four digits with prefix No.- No.2151 till No.2162. Some confusion was made with mixing C/N numbers, where prototype was No1, and 12 series produced planes were No2-No13. These construction numbers(C/N) were not  matched with two last digits in serial, and first series produced IK-3 was serialed  No2/2151 , and last produced was No13/2162. Common presentation of serial numbers, connected C/N and VeBr , was completely cleared when some nice photos of captured and destroyed IK-3s appear at EBAY, with good view on vertical tail of IK-3 No12/2161 , photographed at Zemun and IK-3 No13/2162 photographed at Veliki Radinci airstrip.

RYAF insignia on IK-3 was applied according the instruction for RYAF warplane painting  and marking, with reduced number of cocardes, one topside placed, one underside . According the photos, one, larger (100 cm dia) was painted on port wing underside, one, smaller (70cm dia) on starboard wing top surface. This rule is not implemented on all the IK-3 planes, as some planes carries just single wing underside insignia, leaving both wing topsides without any markings.

Three colour cammo scheme-Type B- even serialed IK-3 (No2-No12)

Both Rogozarski IK-3 cammo schemes , A and B was used as paint pattern for IK-3,but all the paint spraywork was made by freehand and each plane differs in minor or major paint details. So, this pattern could be used as a quide ,but for particular plane photo documentation must be consulted. Preserved photo documentation gives plenty of data to explain some exception of the painting rules.Below we present few colour artworks ,which depict all the known "non standard" painted IK-3s as well as regular paint samples.Note, Ik-3 No6 crashed at september 1939, before the three colour cammo scheme was introduced.

Rogozarski IK-3 markings

Insignia were changed from peacetime to wartime reduced visibility pattern.Crosses from national insignia had dark blue outline. Initialy Kosovsi krst [Kosovo's cross] was large(100cm dia) and carryed on wings in four position. On the vertical rudder was wide three color flag. In the summer of 1940. that was changed in regard to the new regulatins and IK-3 got got reduced visibility markings. One larger cross was beneath the wing and the small one was on the wing top surface. Mostly lower insignia was under the starboard wing and upper was on port wing. At least one case was known of reversed wing position [lower port and upper starboard]as well the lack of insignia on wing topside.  Insignia color  was in close relations with French insignia colors. Red color used was Crimson, Blue was mid grey blue. Outline of the cross was made in black blue color. That outline color was mix of insignia blue and black color.Insignia size was 100cm dia on early (overall gray) painted scheme and 100/70 cm dia on three colour scheme .

RYAF insignia colours were:

Red Crvena FS 31302 Outer circle
White Bela FS 37778 White cross &circle
Light Blue Svetlo Plava FS 25090 Inner circle
Dark Blue Tamno Plava FS 25053 White cross outline

Interior of the plane was in its natural color of material and Rogozarski Gray Green paint(similar to overall paint scheme colour). Cockpit was mostly in natural metal appearance with deep black instrument panel. Undercarriage interior was in underside color while main U/C legs and wheel hubs are silver. Propeler blades was black, with factory logo(Hamilton Standard/Chauviere/Rogozarski) and two yellow stripes on each prop tip, similar as on French fighters.

Note, all the IK-3 fighters were painted in high glossy finish, to gain few more kilometers of top speed.

The sample  shows approximate computer representation of requested FS color(s).
Samples may appear dithered from several shades due to the limitation of the 24-bit color system.
For best viewing experience, color samples should be viewed on hardware with true (24-bit) color support on a CRT color monitor.
